Gemma Day, Managing Director at Harvey Richmond was Live on BBC 5 Live on Monday 4th September discussing how Weston-Super-Mare is bucking the trend in coastal towns that are getting a bad press at the moment for poor growth.
This, however, is not the case for Weston as employment and investment is on the rise, there are many new businesses setting up in the new business parks located just off Junction 21 of the M5. So why is Weston-Super-Mare different?
There are many reasons why businesses are choosing Weston Super Mare, Firstly the proximity to Bristol and being located on the M5 Motorway. Weston-Super-Mare is also just 20-minute drive to Bristol International Airport giving great links to Europe and international businesses. There is a lot of investment and funding in the area, an up and coming area with new and expanding talent. This is thanks to links with Weston College and university with many Universities/Colleges in the local area, such as UWE, Bristol, Bath and Cardiff.
There are many points addressed in the interview, such as many of the jobs are either seasonal or part-time jobs. Gemma states however that this is not the case, highlighting many companies such as the Ascot Group have expanded by 40% year on year while being based in Weston. Employing a wide set of skilled employees from the local area. Drawing these people away from Bristol is one of the key challenges faced by local businesses.
Gemma comments on how she has set up a recruitment agency in the area to help boost employment and job opportunities in the area. This is an exciting time for those who live and work in Weston, bringing new talent and a new lease of life to the area and its surroundings.
