It’s natural to occasionally feel frustrated with our jobs, but maybe you have reached a point in your life when you need a new challenge, whether this is a change of company or a complete overhaul of your career. Read on for help making this decision.
Is it your job or your career you want to change?
It’s important to be clear as to why you want to leave your current role so that you can take the right course of action. Common reasons can be;
• You have been in that role at that company for too long
• You are no longer interested in that line of work
• You feel undervalued
• You are making no progress
• You don’t get on with your co-workers or manager
Think about if it really is your career you want to change. Be very specific about what you do and do not like about your current position and what would make your work life more enjoyable. You may find that changes such as moving employer or sector make a big difference to your happiness. It may also be worth speaking to your manager and seeing what changes you can make to your current position that will help.
Deciding on a new path
If you decide that a career change is needed, the next step is to think about what your ideal job would entail on a day-to-day basis. For example, less paperwork and admin. Be sure that whatever path you chose to take interests you enough; a larger salary may seem appealing but you may find yourself just as unhappy with the work.
You should also consider what transferable skills and capabilities you have such as;
• Detailed research
• People skills
• Organisational skills
• Getting ideas off the ground
Of course, if you do not want to use your existing skills you may need to retrain or start from the bottom again, are you prepared for this? If you have financial commitments you may prefer to stay in your current job and do a part-time or flexible course.
